Let me finish the story about that cracked slab in Texas1. My client was convinced the problem was our material. I was confident in our quality control, so I asked him to do a simple test. I told him to take a long, straight level and place it across the cabinets where the crack had appeared. The photo he sent back showed everything. There was a visible gap under the level, almost 1/4 inch (6mm) high, right where two cabinet boxes met. Our quartz slab is incredibly strong, but it's rigid and doesn't bend. The weight of quartz adds up quickly. A normal-sized kitchen countertop can weigh 500-600 pounds, and a large island can easily exceed 1,000 pounds. The cabinet structure underneath is what bears all this weight, 24/7. That is why cabinet quality5 is so important. The best cabinets are made with plywood boxes and have solid wood structural elements6. They include reinforcement blocks in the corners and have a solid back panel. Most importantly, they must be screwed directly into the wall studs, not just into the drywall.
